Today’s topic was “Getting Published,” and the panelists were students who are editors of campus publications or who have a strong record of getting published. Having those students talk to my current MMC 2100 students makes my students aware of the process for getting published.
Hearing from these student editors (and seeing them) helps my current students realize that the students in leadership positions now or who have strong portfolios are the ones who started getting published while they were in MMC 2100.
Too often students think, “Oh, I can’t try to get published until I’ve taken more classes” or “I will wait to apply for an internship during my senior year.”
Weeks and semesters pass by while they wait. By seeing that successful media students are the ones who sought professional experience as soon as possible can be a real motivation for my students to get going now.
