And there was a reason — no electricity. As we now consider how to reduce our electricity use, we talk about using compact flourescent light bulbs and setting our air conditioner at a higher temperature. The approach at the Tiptons’ home in Cades Cove was different — lamp light and sunlight, a fireplace in the winter, and cross ventilation in the summer (opening windows and doors — with no screens).
