Grading @ 35,000 feet

I’m en route to the Journalism Education Association convention and have a 4-hour flight to Phoenix. A great time to do some grading. More is required than a pen, as this week’s lab assignment was to create a Soundslides presentation on some aspect of the theme “The Gator Nation is more than TitleTown.” Their presentations […]

My e-mail to the Florida Speaker of the House

I was motivated by an e-mail from the UFF urging us to e-mail our state representatives. Here’s my e-mail to Larry Cretul, the temporary Speaker of the House and my county’s representative. *** To the honorable Larry Cretul: As a faculty member at the University of Florida, I urge you to support higher education by […]

Joining forces to oppose higher ed budget cuts Faculty, graduate students and undergraduates rallied on the UF campus yesterday at noon to protest the proposed budget cuts to higher education — especially at UF. Some speeches. Petitions to sign. A phone for calling legislators in Tallahassee. A good idea for raising awareness of the planned cuts. As one speaker said, the rally was important, but we all need to be contacting our state legislators to express our concerns.  You can find your senator or find your representative. Then e-mail or call.

The Save Our Schools coalition of student groups is a good step for raising student awareness about the budget crisis at UF. I hope that after the rally, which will […]

How life’s focus can change in just moments…

You think you have plenty to do and to think about on a daily basis. But then something happens that puts all those usual thoughts and activities in a different perspective. A good friend was told by the dean of the college that her job was one of the ones he was going to submit […]

Counting on leadership for problem solving

As individuals and as a country, we are counting on those in national/state/local government positions to be making informed and proactive decisions to address the financial crisis. But we need to remind ourselves that often these same people were part of what got us into trouble in the first place. Yes, we have newly elected […]

How decisions are made

The last two weeks certainly have been some of my most discouraging days as a faculty member at UF. Part of that is due to the economy’s impact on UF and our College. But there’s much more to it — the process by which decisions are being made. I had been moderately hopeful that through […]
