Peggy Gregory (on left) and Bill Flechtner (Oregon) led a morning of discussion at the Mentor Forum, attended by mentors from both the 1st and 2nd mentor groups. Lots of problem solving and idea swapping.

Airport audio lesson en route to JEA/NSPA convention

Martha Rothwell (North Carolina) and I started the audio training while in the Charlotte Airport waiting for our flight to St. Louis. Judy Robinson and I ran into Martha and Kay Phillips in the airport and didn’t want a learning opportunity pass us by. We were en route to the JEA/NSPA convention, where one of […]

Trying to avoid discipline problems

Just three weeks ago in my graduate teaching course, one of the class presentations was on Discipline Problems in the Classroom. The members in the class were most interested in the topic, as all had either been a teacher or a student in a class when a discipline problem occured.  The almost-a-discipline-incident in my last […]

Lots to think about besides class

I had planned a group activity, problem solving and discussion for lecture yesterday. The students worked in teams of two or three. They were to analyze the news releases they had been in contact with — in the textbook, the sample I had provided, and a practice they had written — and develop a list […]

The photo you don’t get is the one when you don’t have your camera. Sometimes students will tell me that they are photojournalism majors, but they won’t have their cameras with them in class. Part of being a photographer is having the camera with you. That way you’re ready for those unexpected photo opportunities. “Who’s a photjournalism student who has a camera today?” I asked the day when a panel was going to talk about getting published. Derek Gilliam had his camera. So he got the photo assignment — taking a photo of the panel that I could use in my blog.

Disginguising between a personal blog and a professional blog

For MMC 2100, students are to create a blog and post entries for several days. We’ve said that the blog should be a professional blog and not a personal blog. We’ve said that the blog should focus on their reporting experiences for two recent MMC 2100 assignments. One student after class wanted me to clarify. […]

Who has a cell phone?

Typically I start lecture with the reminder of “Please turn off and store your cell phone.” But today, I asked the students in my 8th-period lecture to get out their cell phones. As you can see, everyone has one. We’d started class with a discussion of what they’d learned from the panel of editors who […]

No land lineI asked the students in my 6th-period lecture course how many do not have a land line. Almost none of them do. This supports what I heard on an advisory council panel yesterday that 1 in 3 adults under the age of 30 don’t have a land line. That can affect the results of political polls that are based on telephone surveys — that are based on land line phone numbers. But I certainly don’t want to surveyers to find my cell phone number.
