Newspapers as a great learning experience for students
I became a believer in the value of NIE my first year as a high school teacher — and not because of my newspaper advising. I was assigned a sophomore English class that would now be termed an “at risk” class. All of the 35 students on the class roster — except for two — […]
Seeing the school year through the high school newspaper
I’ve just finished judging high school newspapers for an evaluation service. The comments are made. The points are totaled (in pencil). The papers are shipped UPS with a tracking number. The judging process is interesting in terms of seeing the year compressed into six issues of the school newspaper. The presidential campaigns. School sporting events. […]
Day of high spirits UF held two graduation ceremonies today. These grads added to more than 300,000 graduates of the University of Florida, according to the president of the UF Alumni Association who introduced the outstanding undergraduate student awards. As a marshal, I arrived 90 minutes before the ceremony to help with organizing for the processional. My assignment was to lead the doctoral students. For me, this was a special assignment, as I can appreciate the time and effort the doctoral students have invested in their academic work. Another special part of the doctoral graduation is that each doctoral student is escorted by a faculty — typically somone on his or her dissertation committee. I had worked with two of the doctoral grads — I had one in class and was on another’s dissertation committee. Both will be starting faculty positions in just a few days.

JEA Mentor Academy – Day #3
We’ve had a whirlwind three days — exchanging ideas, sharing concerns, learning strategies, asking questions. A great activity today was having the mentors work in pairs in simulated conversations — roleplaying the mentor and new teacher, working through a new teacher challenge (like grading). The pairs of experienced teachers each played a part. Afterwards, they […]
JEA Mentor Academy — Day #2
Eleven new mentors. Four states. Five trainers rotating through sessions on recruiting new teachers, working with principals, learning to develop a mentoring relationship, establishing an action plan for implementing mentoring in their states, etc. The mentors are problem solving with partners or working in table groups to develop strategies, and role playing. They are writing reflections, […]
