UF announces plans to keep classes going even with swine flu outbreak
The email was sent to deans today, explaining UF’s developing plans for keeping classes going even if the university is hit with an outbreak of the swine flu. The dean of our college forwarded the e-mail to us. He had told of us of the coming of the e-mail yesterday in our faculty meeting when […]
Salaries for game plans vs. lesson plans
Thanks to UF beat reporter Nathan Crabbe for helping us put our salaries in perspective — with Urban Meyer’s salary. In his blog, The Chalkboard, Crabbe tells of the ESPN site that lets you determine how many years you will need to work to earn what Meyer makes in one season. [You also can compare […]
Anti-flu kit for back to school
Twenty-five percent. That’s the percentage of students (and faculty) that the University of Florida administration say could contract swine flu this fall. With a student body of almost 50,000, that’s more than 12,000 students. Prevention is being promoted on campus as in K-12 school settings. UF has e-mailed information to faculty and students and has […]
Protesting elimination of classical music
This is the first time I’ve had to cross a picket line to get to a faculty meeting. A group of protesters were outside the building where we met. As you can see, not only were they armed with posters but stringed instruments. The group was protesting the dean’s decision to change the format of […]
College technology requirement limits student choices
My post on a college requirement mandating students to have an iPhone or an iPod touch led to a comment that by requiring an iPhone one is required to purchase an AT&T phone plan. That AT&T phone plan requirement has been a criticism of Apple since their partnernship was announced when the iPhone was launched. […]
First, the diploma; then, the handshake; then, the hand sanitizer
After shaking hands with the department chair, the dean and the president, the students walked down from the stage to find a table with big bottles of hand sanitizer, a precaution in these times of concern about swine flu.
View of graduation from the stage
Our college’s graduation was this evening. My duty as a marshal was to sit on the stage before the ceremony started, which is where I was when I took this photo. A colleague and I then signaled the audience and students to rise when the platform party was to process.
Calculating and uploading 243 students’ grades
The 243 grades are entered and finalized — meaning that the grades have been sent to the UF grade administrator. Paige (my lecture assistant) and I went lab by lab and then student by student, entering and then checking each grade. With a big class like this, I’m always interested in seeing how many of […]
Florida legislature 101
Nothing like a legislative issue of personal concern (the potential huge cuts to higher education) to help me become even more aware than usual in the Florida legislative process. I know how to find a legislator by district or zip code. I’ve seen how the House Web site has a built-in option for sending an […]
SOS (Save Our Schools) is the right message
I was glad to hear that students and faculty are going to have a public outlet for showing concern about the UF budget cut proposals. The Save Our Schools coalition of student groups is a good step for raising student awareness about the budget crisis at UF. I hope that after the rally, which will […]
