Planning for JEA mentor academy
I can’t say that planning for the JEA mentor academy is the reason that I haven’t been keeping up my blog for the last couple of weeks — but that would be one reason. Next week is the mentor academy, being held at UC/Berkeley with 11 new mentors joining the program. The mentors represent California, […]
New Technology for Journalism Educators — course at HSJI to help teachers update their skills
Learning for teachers and students Summer workshops like the High School Journalism Institute at Indiana University not only provide instruction and practice opportunities but also motivate teachers and students to move to the next level in their media work. In our New Technology for Journalism Teachers class, most of the teachers in the class have […]
The Cades Cove Loop provides many options
The 11-mile loop around Cades Cove provides a series of views of the cove, the mountains and the wildlife. Whether I’m biking, driving a car or walking around the cove, I am filled with the beauty of the location — but reminded of the solitude and hard life for those who lived there. No calling […]
Note: No electrical lines And there was a reason — no electricity. As we now consider how to reduce our electricity use, we talk about using compact flourescent light bulbs and setting our air conditioner at a higher temperature. The approach at the Tiptons’ home in Cades Cove was different — lamp light and sunlight, a fireplace in the winter, and cross ventilation in the summer (opening windows and doors — with no screens).

Looking for posts
A different kind of ‘posts’ along Sparks Lane in Cades Cove in the Smokies. I’ve not been posting as I’ve been hiking in the Smokies. Cades Cove at one point had more than 300 residents, who were very self-reliant, as they were miles from the nearest store. “No service available” certainly meant much more than […]
View from my seat on the back row The speeches were made by Alumni of Distinction — each sharing how starting as a student at UF had helped lead to career success and then offering some brief advice. Hope the students were listening: Maintain your professional and personal integrity. Be willing to take some risks. Know that friendships made at UF may last a lifetime. Use your career to make a contribution to others.

Pinpointing travels – One of UF’s initiatives is to encourage students to have travel and study experiences out of the country. Sunday night after graduation, six faculty members in the college, three graduate students and 92 undergraduates left for a month of study and travel in Spain and Greece.

Hats off to the UF grads
A special part of graduation for many students is decorating their mortar boards. One had painted a UF logo and her initials. Theother had a map with pushpins showing all her travels.

Thinking about shared governance
Every organization has its structure and process for determining how decisions are made. Businesses have CEOs, boards of directors and stockholders. Not-for-profit organizations have executive directors, boards and volunteers. Some businesses have different models, such as Starbucks with the employees actually owning the business. Universities have a range or approaches to decisions and determining who […]
