Getting ready for the graduation ceremony
Ready for graduation The place: O’Connell Center The time: Sunday at 1:20 The event: Graduation for the College of Journalism and Communications I was a marshal at the back of the line for the journalism grads. Teaching as a team
Even though teachers work with dozens and often hundreds of students, the experience can have some solitary aspects, as we typically are teaching on our own. It’s our course and our students, our lesson plans and our decisions. One of the aspects I really enjoy about teaching MMC 2100 is that it’s a team effort. […]
Fundraising for public radio
On the air I joined Donna Green-Townsend on the air today to fundraise for WUFT-FM and WJUF-FM, the public radio stations that are housed in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida, where I’m on faculty. We worked during “Fresh Air,” one of my favorite programs from National Public Radio. “Fresh Air” […]
My lab joined The Gator Nation campaign on YouTube
My lab joined The Gator Nation campaign on YouTube yesterday. Our lab assignment for the day was writing a print ad for The Gator Nation campaign. Leann Williams, an advertising student in the lab, talked with me about the YouTube aspect of the campaign. I checked it out on the UF site for The Gator Nation and […]
Hogwarts and UF
Lauren Ruff was one of the students recognized at the College of Journalism and Communications Awards Banquet this week, receiving an award as one of the top advertising students. I’ve followed her progress in the college since she was a student in my MMC 2100 lab. She has been the director of AdWorks, an ad agency […]

Universities have a range or approaches to decisions and determining who […]
Help proctoring the quiz
Giving a quiz with a class of 150 students involves more logistics than with a smaller class. Two members of the College’s Journalism and Communications Ambassadors volunteered to be proctors for the quiz. They helped distribute quizzes and Scantrons, supervise during the exam, and collect the quizzes and Scantrons when we were through. In terms […]
March for Babies: The news release assignment and the successful event
I’ve learned that when it comes to writing assignments for Writing for Mass Communication, the best public relations practice assignments are based on actual community events — most often events sponsored by not-for-profit organizations. The students experience the first assignment of many public relations students in their volunteer and internship work — writing a news […]
Taking to the street for a good cause
Thousands joined the March for Babies in Gainesville on March 29, to raise funds for research and assisting infants and pregnant women. The walkers were only about a mile from finishing the 8.6-mile course at this point. Refreshments and prizes were distributed along the course. The tent in the background is aid station provided by the […]
