A fun part of our daily routine was being able to go as a group to lunch on most days during the week. These were working lunches, with us talking as a group on issues related to advising or with partners planning their Soundslides project.

One of the technology learning experiences for the class was creating a Soundslides presentation. The class worked in pairs — determining a topic for the story they would tell, taking the photos, and recording the audio. Colleague Judy Robinson taught the class how to use Audacity and Garageband to edit their audio files. The teams […]

Judy Robinson and I are teaching a graduate class at the Indiana University High School Journalism Institute. Our students are high school media teachers. The major assignment is for the students to go on campus and find a story that can be reported through multimedia — text, photos, audio, video. Judy and I decided that […]

Creating a Soundslides story is an assignment for the teachers in our class at the High School Journalism Institute. Janet and Bryan decided to tell the story of dining options in the student union. Janet interviewed one of the food service employees. Bryan recorded the sounds of the dining area that they will use to […]

Judy and Melanie made sure the audio recorders were ready. After Judy explained how to use the recorders, each team received a recorder and headset to use for the afternoon assignment of recording audio and taking photos for a Soundslides presentation.

Now it’s the summer of 2008. I am team teaching a teaching with technology […]

Learnin’ and education The children of the Smokies had many learning opportunities — how to churn butter, plant crops, make clothes, gather honey from hives, and preserve meat. But the families in the Smokies wanted their children to have the kind of learning that happens in a structured school setting. Little Greenbrier School began holding […]

Margaret Stevenson hiked to Mt. Le Conte 718 times. Most of those trips were day hikes, with her hiking up and down (at least 11 miles). She was the first woman to hike all 900 miles of trails in the Smokies — which she completed when she was 64. In my hikes to Mt. Le […]

A “highlight” of the year for me is hiking to Mt. Le Conte, the third highest peak in the Smokies. The only way to get to Mt. Le Conte is hiking one of five trails. My favorite is the Alum Cave Trail, about five miles (up, up, up). This was a view at sunset. Not […]
